U.DAB launches largest small-scale DAB multiplex in the U.K.
The European Broadcasting Union released a report on audience trends for radio, which gives an overview of radio consumption between 2015 and 2020. The information is based on official currency data from national Radio Audience Measurement systems across the EBU Member countries.
The report focuses on the full radio market and public service media radio services, specifically time spent listening, reach and market share.
According to the study, European citizens listened to radio an average of 2h 18m per day in 2020, down two minutes from 2019, and 11 minutes from 2015. Among youth (15- to 24-year-olds), daily listening was at 1h 21m, down four minutes from the previous year, and 17 minutes from 2015.
The report noted that the majority of people are still reached by radio every week (84% of all citizens), but there has been a “gradual and persistent decline.”
In addition, it showed that PSM weekly reach has declined as well, but is still fairly stable. PSM daily market share also remains stable — 39.8% in 2020, down 0.2 percentage points from 2015 for all citizens. Among youth, the daily market share rose 2.6 percentage points in those five years to 26.7%.
