Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan recently added a 41.2 surround sound system to its Acoustic and Vibration Engineering Center. The center focuses on studying a wide variety of sound behaviors and how humans perceive and process sound. Key to the installation was Genelec speakers.
Professor Yasunori Sugita, deputy director of the center, explained, “I’ve been researching stereophonic sound for some time, and when it comes to measuring Head Related Transfer Functions, I need loudspeakers with completely flat characteristics that I can then easily tweak if needed. This is why we introduced a multichannel 3D loudspeaker system that could reproduce the sound field more accurately, and this ultimately led us to Genelec.”
The result is 41 Genelec 8320a small two-way powered monitors and a pair of 7380 powered subwoofers. Both use Genelec’s Smart Active Technology for control. In addition, Genelec Loudspeaker Manager software is used for overall speaker management.
Sugita added, “Genelec monitors not only meet our criteria but also offer the flexibility and ease of calibration essential for our research needs. … Their scalability and stability as well as their compatibility with RME audio interfaces make them ideal for the precision needed in our research.”
